Writing

This is my first ever writing prompt I responded to on Reddit. I had seen the sub a few days before; while mindlessly browsing writing subreddits to get involved in, this had come up. The idea that while humans were the most pacifistic species, they could also be the deadliest.

This post in particular had gained a lot of traction in the sub, and it seemed like a great fit for me to try. So applied myself I did.

Apparently I did real good on this one over the others, and got several comments on this. Pleased was an understatement. Not bad for my first try.

Done in approximately March 13, 2016.

Note: My writing for Reddit writing prompts is different for brevity. While this is a good example of my writing, I often omit backstory and several details to create a concise post. Please look at my other works if you’re looking for my more regular style of writing.

“Father.”

“Yes, brood?”

“Why do we not attack the humans? Are they not reprehensible?”

The multi-legged creature looked at its miniature copy of itself clinging to the mushroom tree.

This was a fun little prompt I saw pop up during a dive into r/WritingPrompts one night. Short, but interesting. I might expand on it one day.

The earthquake thankfully didn’t damage my house, though I did break a flatscreen and knocked over some more fragile gaming things. Thankfully mom and my girlfriend helped clean up. She was used to these sorts of things back in Asia, but had gone out of town for a college orientation.

But it was worse at the regional airport. They had shut the place down. And the main 11000’ runway had been wrecked; apparently the ground split the runway apart, and the chasm was at least forty feet across and went down over a hundred feet. Not a safe place to take off or land.

So why was I hearing planes still landing after 10PM?

It was 2AM, everyone was mostly asleep. I myself was in my bed. But there it was, that dull roar of a heavy going in for final. Deciding to fight my laziness, I sat up in bed and looked out the window.

For the most part, I could sometimes see if an aircraft was headed by. In the pitch suburban black not much was visible, but I did make out the marker lights of an aircraft.

Well, that was interesting. The lights were more forward up the fuselage. And the nose beacon was a lot lower than the wing marker lights; it seemed to have a good bit of weight to it. It wasn’t a nimble regional, It also wasn’t those 737 puddle jumpers.

Something did click in my head. Only two classes of aircraft had those kind of wings, and one was too small for it.

This was military.

Why the hell was the military flying in air transports to the airport? It could be relief for sure, but nobody was at the airport since it was shut down. There was no proper place for them to land in the first place. On top of that, it wasn’t like the entire city was in a disaster area; local services could certainly handle a wrecked airport.

I watched the plane until it was obscured by another house, flopping back into bed. What was going on?

I briefly was on a small writing stint near the end of my birthday. I saw this writing prompt, and decided to turn it around and flip it on its butt. Suffice to say some retro, old sci-fi might’ve played a hand in my final result (the aliens definitely took a page out of The Jupiter Theft).

Truth be told I was horrified by these aliens. Being unarmed in just the NASA jumpsuit, was not something I was accustomed to. These floppy, tuby aliens of burgundy, with three eyestalks and two mouths. Their voice sounding like someone drowned. I was instantly grabbed and pulled down the corridor.

Well, this was certainly an interesting bit! I had this very interesting prompt that turned out to be almost a good short story, all drawing inspiration from my online buddies’ DnD group (which I have to chronicle sometime). So, bouncing off of a prompt reply by u/ABitofKindness, I created the following prompt response over 3 or so posts, as there were character limits.

Done in the span of July 20-23, 2020.

Pre Story Notes

To skip a bunch of visual descriptions, I’ll do what I did in the original thread; quickly show the party and outline who is who:

Left to right:

  • Pri the rogue bard,
  • Ned the necromancer sorceror
  • Melarue the half-elf noble fighter
  • Fiona, Ned’s girlfriend
  • Marios the pope elf.
  • Mance the swashbuckling rogue
  • Seijun the rogue monk
  • Yorina the alchemist trading cleric
  • Nora, Yorina and Marios’ friend.

Got a name to a face now? Good! I’ll let you get going without adieu.

This was the first WritingPrompts I had done in 2019 on Reddit. I definitely fell in line, hook and sinker for the plot; write a story about being polite to the dragon, rather than defeating it for the goal. I decided to use an idea I ad from something I was writing in 2009, with a sort of OC based on me and a girl called Jennifer (whom you might’ve seen art for here in the past), going together through various settings like time travelers. I used the Reddit prompt to formulate a sort of “intro” story to that idea, which I’ll be springboarding off with in the future.

This is the second part of a two-part post, which the first part was posted a few weeks ago.

This version is also slightly edited, as I didn’t like how rough the first part was written on-demand when posting. This was done as my on-the-fly typing for the prompt had plot holes, and things wouldn’t match up from the edits I did for the first entry.

First Entry

For me loving Queens, I had no idea this cafe existed. It was closer to the residential block near Merrick, and was strangely upkept in comparison to the older and rundown establishments on the same block. Why it wasn’t covered in graffiti or looked like it was a cheap knock-off smartphone shop was beyond me. It was set apart from the others, its clean red brick exterior clashing with the violet and gray painted shops around.

This version is also slightly edited, as I didn’t like how rough the first part was written on-demand when posting. The dragon and the warrior seemed too cardboard-cutout, and the events seemed to pre-planned.

Second Entry

I could see the clearing up ahead. My nose already scrunched at the smell of scorched flesh and smoke. I shook my head, focused on my task at hand.

I ran through my head what the old man had said back at the zen garden. Don’t go in starting a fight. Use wit. Appeal to him as your own friend. Give him a gift of interest.

This was the first WritingPrompts I had done in 2018 on Reddit. It seemed fairly easy enough; overdramatize a mundane, everyday situation. I took the situation of my broken Jeep to task, transforming it into this story. Let’s see if you can spot how many technical references I make to a 42RE transmission.

Author’s Note: This was supposed to be a short episode for the end of the month, but actually ended up being just as long as a regular blog serial installment. So I apologize for not have the additional illustrations that would go along with such a lengthy piece. That aside, please do enjoy!

It was one of those odd times that Heather had actually experienced. Usually she was late, stumbling into the kitchen sloppily dressed. But this particular morning she actually had woken up in time with the rest of the household. The air was cooler, having sent her sleeping deeply the previous night. The daylight had changed and now resembled early in the afternoon. Her whole body knew that a change of season was upon them.

Today’s tasks were a bit mundane, mostly with clearing fallow grass from the back garden. There might be an errand into the inner town for Elizabeth, but only time would tell. At least she was able to take Fluff up and about.
