A Wild El Cheapo Gas Station Appears

I was sleeping when I Dad woke me up, asking me if there was a gas station nearby. I check the GasBuddy app on my phone to be greeted by this. I had to screenshot this to show proof of this gas station; I’ve never heard of it before despite traveling here previously, and it was only because of that app that I now know of its existence.

The name itself gave me a good laugh. I’m not sure what El Cheapo sells, but they’re pretty low, considering the rest of the prices. But too bad, Sunoco has you beat.

**Technical note: the metadata on the screenshot shows 2:52AM, even though the actual screenshot says 3:52AM. This is because of Daylight’s Saving Time, and I’ll be sticking with the shown time for consistency.

ETSU – Shut-in Snow Day

Consider it my lucky day. One of the few weekends I actually decide to stay at my apartment, it snows!

This would be the first snowfall at my new apartment. Maybe it’s a sign of good things to come, who knows?

Snowed-in evenings require snowed-in foods. Let’s hope that the roads aren’t crazy, and there’s something affordable in-distance.

Touchscreen Vending Machine

While walking at West Town Mall, I was surprised to see this installed vending machine with a touchscreen.

Futuristic me was elated, especially since I was still busy playing Mass Effect 3 and imagining a futuristic world in the next 10 years. This was also on top of a class project where I had to create a touchscreen vending machine in an airplane, which dispensed hygiene products. So seeing something in life that sort of followed that model was spiffy.

It was enough I even showed Mom, who took a pause herself at seeing this giant screen vending machine as well.

But to my dismay, everything was sold out. While I didn’t need the drink, I had planned to see how it handled the purchase.

Unfortunately, the mall was still banning photography in the mall when I took this. So it wasn’t as clear as I liked to showcase what was going on. The reason I bent that rule was for how monumental that was.

EDIT: Future Janeil here. I never saw a touchscreen vending machine like this till 2015 or so, and it was outside of Tennessee. I wish they caught on more.

UT Heart Hospital Sculpture

Went with Dad to visit his sister in the hospital. It was a bit late but this very interesting sight greeted me when we walked in.

Well, at least it was interesting to me. It reminded me a lot of Mass Effect architecture for some reason. I also like the contrast with the warm tones and the darkness around it.

I especially got attracted to this, due to my recent interest in physical sculptures the year before. I’m a bit more observant of these things in public when I walk around, and at least try to note them if not grab a photo.

DIGM – Nuke Launched Detected

While I was heading out one day from DIGM classes, I noticed one of the computers had this typed into the DOS prompt. Looks like someone had a crack at a terminal joke while the computer was being wiped with Norton Ghost!

While I didn’t get to grab another photo of it, it stayed like that for another couple days. So the joke was around for a bit.

ETSU – Library Dome Ceiling

By far, the ETSU library is one of my most favorite places of campus. It is a partial shame that parking is horrible to access.

One thing I’ve grown to love, is the late hours that you can use to step into the library. I strolled in about 10:16 at night when I grabbed this shot,

The ceiling always gave me the vibe that I was someplace grand. Like Washington D.C, a more classic subway, heck even a museum. Something with class and gravitas.

Definitely a far cry from Walters State library.

The GPS Took a Nap

On the way back home from Charlotte, Dad decided he didn’t need the GPS anymore. I still let it keep running although it wasn’t on the dash any longer, and promptly went to sleep.

I woke up as we just entered Shelby, to a repeated pattern of beeping noises. I look down and see that the GPS had a series of Zs dotted across the search bar. That’s not even mentioning how it even got into the international keyboard.

The first thing that came to mind was how that it got into that menu. But more prevalent was an old Reader’s Digest joke about a guy who was on a plane, fell asleep and his finger was on the “Z” key. I was in disbelief that this happened years later from reading that (2007 or so, I think.)

I couldn’t make this up if I tried.

Abnormal Temperature Ranges

I love my new tablet. It’s like I’m living a century in the future. I don’t need to carry my laptop everywhere.

But sometimes it gets bugs. And when it loses the Internet connection, strange things happen. As with here.

I would think with such temperature ranges, we’d all be dead by now. -_-;;

Wendy’s Digital Menu Error

For years I imagined that digital billboards would be a thing of the future. I had NO idea that it would be this recent! While this was a welcome development, there were still bugs to iron out. I caught this one night with my family when we stopped somewhere. This Wendy’s menu in-restaurant was running on Windows 7 and needed to run and update. Typical Windows.

ETSU – Mysterious Fork

There’s a number of things I’ve seen while going around ETSU, and I’ve not always been in the frame of mind or situation to grab a photo of all of them.

That said, I’ve been able to break that trend occasionally. This is one of those times.

My cousin and I had gone out to grab something from someone’s printer in another room, which was down the hall form his dorm. This person in question had one of those shared, Internet IP printers, so you could print remotely.

We grab his assignment, head back to his dorm and encounter this odd sight at 2AM in the morning; a fork in the middle of the floor.

It definitely surprised me, especially since the floor was clear when we’d passed before. My cousin hadn’t noticed it or paid attention, but I stopped him and grabbed a photo. I also had him stick his foot in for reference. I think I was on the lines of “you could’ve faked this, show someone else in the photo” for some reason.

Paranormal fork? I don’t think so. But someone had to dash through that hallway and accidentally lost silverware within a 3 minute timespan.
